kawala
The Kawala is a single reed Egyptian flute. Most often played today at religious festivals and weddings, it has its origin as being what shepherds used to guide their flock. For this reason, it is said, the Kawala is seen to assist in any musical composition that consists of a "call-and-response" sequence. One 12th century poet-musician, the Egyptian Ibn Sana Al-Mulk, has referred to this function of melody as a singing of the instrument that is "like doing something on loan and by extension."
