Ancient silks of Assam
For Assam, sericulture (silk production) is an expression of its heritage and key to understanding the valuable cultural and economic role of folk craftsmanship in the region. Traditionally cultivated in the wild throughout rural Assam, silk production has now mostly moved to urban centers, which has threatened the look and feel of these rare silks.
Muga (meaning "golden brown) is one of 3 silks made inAssam, the others being Paat (white silk) and Eri (woollen silk). Most commonly today, Muga and Paat are the materials used for the “mekhela-chaddar,” the two-piece dress worn by Assamese women.
What is special about Muga silk is that it is made and found in only one place in the world. The Muga silkworm and trees it feeds on are indigenous exclusively to the Assam region. As a result, Muga was granted a GI (Geographical Indication) Patent in 2007 to help preserve the heritage and quality of this cultural trademark.
