This project covers fieldwork conducted in July 2007 on the Siddis/Habshis of Karnataka, an African diasporic community in south India. My interest was to document a fledging women’s cooperative of Siddi quilt-makers that had achieved tremendous monetary success internationally. Despite the fact that the quilts are marketed as the craftwork of “African”-Indians, these women chose to see their artwork as proud expressions of their unique Indianness.
