Front and Back
Traditionally, stitching begins at the center, and each fragment taken from daily life creates a new periphery making the quilt an ever-growing entity that changes shape at each step. The creative process required to make a commercial quilt reverses the inherited one. The center of the quilt is made at the end, and stitching begins at the border. Individual styles remain, but the dynamic form of the household quilt is discouraged by outside supervisors who require homogeneous quilts that can be sold at a fixed price.
